Round 10 - 22 August
Game 1
Wilston Grange 9-8-62
Redcliffe Tigers 7-10-52
The game started with Redcliffe controlling the play over a lacklustre group of Supermen. Perhaps there was the thinking that as the game was a mixed supers/masters contest that it would be straightforward, or perhaps many were basking in the glow of representative football following the Melbourne trip. Additionally, some of the new rule changes were obviously having an impact on some players (note to self - do not complain to the umpires again). Brendan kept us in the game and was responsible for all scores in the quarter. Shady, Micky-O, KB, and LG were prominent around the packs. With master coach Shane-O calling the shots, the quarter time address contained the usual positive words and comments, and put us back on track. Redcliffe by 15 points at the break.
The Supermen bounced back early in the second quarter to put the first few on the board. Some good play around the ball was finished off up forward with Beamer starting to bag a few in his first game back from the snow of Canada. Pussy, Brenno, Howsey, Johnno, and Puddles stepped up to make the contest. A few late goals to the visitors saw them go into the main break 9 points up.
The premiership quarter was upon us and once again the Supermen stood up. Stevie-D, Brett, Cranky, Halvo, Josh, JP, and D-Mac all produced the goods to see the Gorillas on the way. And who can forget the efforts of yours truly in controlling the play around the stoppages - I certainly can't and as narrator, I do have the liberty of talking myself up. Unfortunately the quarter was again marred by a number of 50m penalties for verbalising - seems some people never learn. A barnstorming 4 goals to 2 saw us take a slender 4 point lead in the final change.
The final quarter opened well for the Supermen with the first goal on the board in a matter of minutes. It was at this point that the Spirit of Football was broken for the day. After a few incidental we all wish to forget Ron Jeremy called time on the game only 5 minutes in. A very disappointing end to the contest, however Ron made the correct call.
To all the Grange lads - well done for keeping it together, a toughing it out for a well earned victory.
Goal kickers: Brendan 3, Beamer 3, Josh 2, and Halvo
Game 2
Wilston Grange 16-11-107
Caboolture Stars 9-9-63
For a change, the Supers took up residence on the hill to cheer on the Masters (and Sponge Bob, Melon, and Al in particular). Opportunities for positive commentary abounded.
The game opened with a strong squad of 24 fit and firing Masters (plus Supers). Leading the way in the middle were DES, P-Mac, Melon, Al, and Freak. Good ball use saw a number of opportunities created for the likes of Troy, Brent, and our hero Spongy. Unfortunately, we did not fully capitalise and at the end of a very even quarter, we saw Caboolture take a 2 point lead into the first change.
The second quarter was almost a replica of the first with both teams looking to gain the advantage. Tony-O, J-Mac, Trev, C-Mac, and Marto came into the play with some solid contributions around the ground. Newcomers Mark and Paul also showed some class, pointing to long careers with the Masters of the Universe. Chilli went down with a recurrence of his rib injury (obviously the conditions were too dry) while Sponge Bob, after looking solid early, managed to injure both ankles simultaneously, resulting in him being stretchered from the ground and taking no further part in the game. Would this be a critical loss for the Gorillas old boys? Time would tell as the Masters took a 1 goal advantage into the main break.
With Radar leading the way across half back, the lads continued to fight hard against Caboolture. Lee, Fids, and Clarkie also stepped up to the mark to become important contributors. Maysie, turning the clock back to 1984 when he kicked 172 goals in a season, showed his class with a beautiful left foot goal (it only took 2 and a half quarters of constructive comment from the boundary) as well as a number of precision left foot passes around the ground. The Masters, picking up the pace, took a handy 11 point lead into the final break - would it be enough?
The final quarter showed true class from the Masters of the Universe, a 7 goal to 1 burst putting the game beyond doubt. It was raining goals giving some unusual opportunities for players to get amongst the action on the scoreboard. Howsey, fresh from a solid performance in the first game, boobed up to kick truly while Shane-O used his pace to get free and slot one from 5. However, the highlight of the quarter came when Supercoach Cranky found space on the wing. With dash, he set off on a 4 bounce run, dodging 3 players before kicking from the square for his first goal since 1992. At the end, the Masters of the Universe were victorious by 44 points. A Masterful performance.
Goalkickers: Troy 4, J-Mac 2, Tony-O 2, Brent 2, Trev, Maysie (off the left), Howsey, Melon, Shane-O, and (I cannot believe this) Cranky
